Uses

  • Thiamine deficiency
  • Beriberi
  • Wernicke’s encephalopathy (specialist use only)

Dose and Duration

Mild deficiency

Adult and child over 3 years: 25‒100 mg PO daily.

Severe deficiency

Adult and child over years: 200‒300 mg PO daily in divided doses, OR by IV infusion over 30 minutes.

Wernicke’s encephalopathy (specialist use)

Adult and child over years: by slow IV injection over 10 minutes, 300 mg daily in divided doses.

Side Effects

  • Anaphylaxis following parenteral administration

Pregnancy

  • Can be used.

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used.

⚠️ Caution

  • Mothers with severe thiamine deficiency should not breast feed as toxic methyl-glyoxal is present in milk.
