Dosage Forms

Ointment

1% tube

Uses

  • Eye infection
  • Trachoma
  • Ophthalmia of the new born
  • Prevention of chlamydial and gonococcal neonatal eye infection
  • Stye
  • Prevention of eye infection complication in measles

Dose and Duration

Eye infection, prevention of eye infection complication in measles patients

Apply gently directly to the eye every 6–8 hours for 7 days.

Trachoma

Apply gently directly to the eye every 6–8 hours for 4–6 weeks.

Ophthalmia of the new born

Apply gently directly to the eye every 6 hours for at least 21 days.

Prevention of neonatal eye infection

1 application directly to both eyes immediately after birth after washing eyes.

Stye

Apply gently directly to the eye every 6–12 hours until two days after symptoms have disappeared.

Contra-indications

  • Allergy to tetracycline

Side Effects

  • Local irritation
  • Allergic reaction

Patient Instructions

  • Wash the eyes with boiled and cooled water before each application.
  • Slightly lower the lower eyelid, then apply the medicine.
  • Close eyelids and massage eyelid gently to aid spread of ointment.
  • Avoid touching the tip of the tube and close tube properly after use to prevent contaminating the ointment.
  • Use within 1 month of opening the tube.

Pregnancy

  • Can be used.

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used.

⚠️ Caution

  • Stop treatment immediately if any serious allergic reactions occur.
  • Avoid prolonged use.
