Dosage Forms

Suspension for injection

≥ 40 IU/0.5 ml

Uses

  • Prophylaxis in patients at risk of tetanus as a result of contaminated wounds, bites, and burns
  • Prevention of maternal and neonatal tetanus

Dose and Duration

Prophylaxis in patients at risk of tetanus

For unimmunised or never fully immunised patients: Give a full course of vaccination (3 doses of 0.5 ml deep SC or IM at intervals of 4 weeks).

Fully immunised patients but last booster >10 years ago: Give 1 booster dose of 0.5 ml deep SC or IM.

Prophylaxis against maternal and neonatal tetanus

Give vaccine 0.5 ml IM into the left upper arm or upper outer thigh as follows:

  • 1ˢᵗ dose (TT1): At first contact with the woman (e.g. 1ˢᵗ antenatal visit or as early as possible during pregnancy)
  • 2ⁿᵈ dose (TT2): At least 4 weeks after TT1*
  • 3ʳᵈ dose (TT3): At least 6 months after TT2*
  • 4ᵗʰ dose (TT4): At least 1 year after TT3*
  • 5ᵗʰ dose (TT5): At least 1 year after TT4*

*Or as early as possible during a subsequent pregnancy

Contra-indications

  • Allergy to the vaccine
  • Severe acute febrile illness

Side Effects

  • Irritation at injection site
  • Fever, malaise

Patient Instructions

  • Side effects may occur within 1–2 days of immunisation; they are usually mild and should not cause worry.
  • Report to health worker immediately any severe allergy.

Pregnancy

  • Can be used.

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used.

Storage

  • Store at 2–8°C. Do not freeze.

⚠️ Caution

  • Postpone vaccination in severe acute febrile illness (do not postpone in case of minor illness).
  • If a serious adverse event occurs following a dose of the vaccine, subsequent doses should not be given.
  • Following an injury, preferably use combined diphtheria and tetanus vaccine (DPT) to prevent both diphtheria and tetanus.
