Uses

Dose and Duration

Hypogonadism

Adult (males): by slow IM injection, initially 250 mg every 2–3 weeks. Usual maintenance 250 mg every 3–6 weeks.

Contra-indications

  • Breast cancer in men
  • Prostate cancer
  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • History of primary liver tumours

Side Effects

  • Prostate abnormalities and prostate cancer
  • Headache, depression, anxiety, physical weakness
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea
  • Increased haematocrit, red cell count and haemoglobin
  • Cholestatic jaundice
  • Changes in libido, gynaecomastia
  • Paraesthesia (tingling or pricking sensation)

Interactions

  • Warfarin (enhanced anticoagulant effect)

Pregnancy

  • Do not use.

Breast-feeding

  • Do not use.

⚠️ Caution

  • Testosterone does not induce fertility.
  • Use with caution in treatment of boys with delayed puberty since it can lead to hastened fusion of epiphyses hence short stature.
  • Examine prostate and breasts regularly during treatment.
  • Monitor blood testosterone concentrations before and during treatment.
  • Use with caution in hypertension, epilepsy, migraine, diabetes mellitus or skeletal metastases.
  • Do not use for enhancing muscular development in healthy individuals or for increasing physical ability.
