Uses

  • Plague
  • Retreatment cases of tuberculosis

Dose and Duration

Plague

Adult: 1 g by deep IM injection every 12 hours for 7–10 days.

Child: 15 mg/kg by deep IM injection every 12 hours for 7–10 days. Maximum 1 g daily.

Initial phase retreatment of tuberculosis (in combination with rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, ethambutol)

Give daily doses as in table below for 2 months.

The total dose (for 2 months) should not exceed 60 g.

Preparation

  • Dissolve streptomycin powder in 5 or 10 ml of water for injection.

Contra-indications

  • Hearing impairment
  • Severe kidney disease

  • Abscess at injection site
  • Hearing impairment
  • Balance impairment
  • Kidney damage
  • Neurotoxicity
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (withdraw treatment)
  • Rash

Interactions

  • Furosemide (increased risk of kidney damage and hearing impairment)

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

Storage

  • Reconstituted solution can be kept for maximum 24 hours below 25°C.

⚠️ Caution

  • Never give as IV injection
  • Stop and withdraw treatment if severe nerve pain occurs
  • Other aminoglycosides used in drug-resistant tuberculosis include kanamycin and amikacin
