Uses

  • Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar)
  • Cutaneous leishmaniasis

Dose and Duration

Visceral leishmaniasis, cutaneous leishmaniasis

Adult and child: 20 mg/kg daily (max 850 mg) by IM injection or slow IV injection over 5 minutes for 28 days in visceral leishmaniasis and 20 days in cutaneous infection.

Contra-indications

  • Moderate to severe renal impairment
  • History of serious adverse reaction following sodium stibogluconate

  • Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea
  • ECG changes
  • Cough
  • Headache, lethargy
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Anaphylaxis

Pregnancy

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Filter injection immediately before administration using a filter of 5 microns or less
  • Stop IV injection if coughing or substernal pain develops during administration as an IV injection
  • Monitor ECG before and during treatment. If a patient with heart disease develops conduction abnormalities, withdraw medicine
  • Successful treatment of mucocutaneous disease may induce inflammation around lesions which may be life threatening if there is pharyngeal or tracheal involvement and may require corticosteroids
  • Use with caution in hepatic impairment and avoid in significant renal impairment
  • Only use in pregnancy if potential benefit outweighs risk
