Uses

  • Induction of anaesthesia
  • Maintenance of anaesthesia

Dose and Duration

Give in oxygen or nitrous oxide-oxygen using a specially calibrated vaporiser and doses adjusted according to response.

Induction of anaesthesia

Adult and child over 1 month: 0.5–1%, increasing gradually to 8%

Neonate: up to 4%

Maintenance of anaesthesia

Adult and child over 1 month: 0.5–3%

Neonate: in oxygen or, 0.5–2%

Contra-indications

  • Known or suspected hypersensitivity to sevoflurane or other halogenated anaesthetics
  • History of hepatitis induced by halogenated inhalational anaesthetic
  • Genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia

Side Effects

  • Agitation, somnolence, headache
  • Bradycardia, tachycardia, hypotension, hypertension
  • Nausea, vomiting, salivary hypersecretion
  • Chills, pyrexia, hypothermia
  • Abnormal blood glucose and liver function tests
  • Anaphylactic reactions

Interactions

  • Levodopa, doxapram, adrenaline, noradrenaline (increased risk of arrhythmias)
  • Methylphenidate (increased risk of hypertension)

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • May depress neonatal respiration if used during delivery
  • Breast-feeding can be resumed as soon as mother has sufficiently recovered from anaesthesia
  • Patients may require early post-operative pain relief since emergence following sevoflurane is fairly rapid
  • Use with caution in patients with coronary disease, seizures, renal impairment or down syndrome
