SALICYLIC ACID

Keratolytic agent that removes dead skin due to excess formation of skin

Dosage Forms

Ointment

Salicylic acid 2%
Salicylic acid 2% + sulphur 2%
Benzoic acid 6% + salicylic acid 3%

Uses

  • Psoriasis
  • Warts
  • Ringworm
  • Dandruff
  • Acne

Dose and Duration

Psoriasis

Apply a thin layer every 8 hours until symptoms improve. Use with lotion to moisturise the skin.

Warts

Apply to the wart once daily until a response occurs.

Ringworm (use formulation with benzoic acid)

Apply a thin layer every 12 hours. Continue for 14 days after the lesion has healed.

Dandruff (use formulation with sulphur), acne

Apply to the affected area at least 2 times per week.

In severe cases, it may be applied daily for 3 days, then twice weekly

Contra-indications

  • Children <2 years
  • Broken skin
  • Wet lesions on the skin

Side Effects

  • Skin irritation and inflammation
  • Excessive drying of skin
  • Salicylism

Patient Instructions

  • When applying on warts, protect the surrounding skin by applying Vaseline® or petroleum jelly. File warts with a pumice stone once per week.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes
  • Do not apply to broken or infected skin or open wounds
  • Avoid application to large areas
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after using the ointment (unless lesion is on hands)
  • Do not apply on breasts if breast-feeding
