Uses

  • Gastrointestinal disorders with smooth muscle spasms
  • Adult enuresis
  • Gustatory sweating

Dose and Duration

All uses

Adult and child over 12 years: 15 mg every 8 hours at least 1 hour before meals and 30 mg at night (max 120 mg daily). Adjust dose according to response

Gastrointestinal disorders characterised by smooth muscle spasms

Child 1 month–12 years: 0.3 mg/kg (max 15 mg) every 6–8 hours at least 1 hour before food

Contraindications

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Paralytic ileus
  • Pyloric stenosis
  • Toxic megacolon
  • Intestinal atony
  • Prostatic enlargement
  • Hypersensitivity to propantheline

Side Effects

  • Constipation
  • Transient bradycardia
  • Reduced bronchial secretions
  • Urinary urgency and retention
  • Dilatation of pupils, loss of accommodation, photophobia
  • Dry mouth
  • Flushing, dryness of skin

Patient Instructions

  • Take your medicine at least 1 hour before meals
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if the medicine causes drowsiness or blurring of vision

Breast-feeding

  • Do not use

⚠️ Caution

  • Propantheline may suppress lactation
  • Use with caution in Down’s syndrome, in children and the elderly, patients with diarrhoea, severe heart disease, ulcerative colitis and in gastrointestinal reflux disease
