Uses

  • Malaria prophylaxis in non-immune visitors to malaria-endemic countries

Dose and Duration

Malaria prophylaxis

Adult and child > 14 years: 200 mg once daily

Child 9–14 years: 150 mg once daily

Child 5–8 years: 100 mg once daily

Child 1–4 years: 50 mg once daily

Child < 1 year: 25 mg once daily

Start 1 week before entering endemic area and continue for 4 weeks after leaving

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset, mouth ulcers
  • Hypersensitivity reactions

Patient Instructions

  • Take after food
  • Side effects mild and usually go as treatment continues

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Pregnant women must be given adequate folate supplements while taking proguanil
