Uses

  • Severe nausea and vomiting
  • Vertigo
  • Labyrinthitis

Dose and Duration

Nausea and vomiting

Adult: 5–10 mg orally every 8 hours

OR 12.5 mg by deep IM every 6 hours when necessary

Contraindications

  • Children <12 years
  • Glaucoma
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Allergy to prochlorperazine

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness, sedation, headache, agitation
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Dry mouth
  • Allergic reaction

Interactions

  • Alcohol (increased risk of side effects)
  • Antiarrhythmics (increased risk of arrhythmias)
  • Antiepileptics (reduced anticonvulsant effect)

Patient Instructions

  • Causes sleepiness; do not operate machinery or drive while taking the medicine
  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment
  • Do not take larger doses than prescribed

Pregnancy

  • Do not use in 3rd trimester

Breast-feeding

  • Do not use

⚠️ Caution

  • Do not stop treatment abruptly to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Reduce dose gradually
  • Use with caution in liver disease, epilepsy, the elderly, and children as they are more susceptible to side effects
