POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE

Mild antiseptic with astringent properties. It has cleansing and deodorising effects.

Dosage Forms

Aqueous solution

0.01% (1:10,000)

Uses

  • Wet lesions of ringworm and athletes foot
  • Exudative eczematous lesions
  • Pemphigus
  • Tropical ulcers
  • Impetigo

Dose and Duration

Wet lesions of skin wounds and infections

Apply 0.01% solution to affected area, followed by debridement and removal of crusts

Change dressing 2–3 times daily

Stop when lesions become dry

Wet lesions of athletes foot

Soak feet in solution every 8 hours until lesions become dry

Contraindications

  • Use with occlusive dressing (airtight, water-tight dressing that completely covers skin)

Side Effects

  • Local irritation especially on mucous membranes
  • Can stain skin, nails and clothing

Patient Instructions

  • Soak cloth in potassium permanganate solution then gently apply on wound. Gently remove crusts.
