Live attenuated vaccine of poliomyelitis virus types 1, 2, and 3 used in routine immunisation of children

20-dose vial (2 ml)

Uses

  • Immunisation against polio

Dose and Duration

Four doses given as below:

Polio 0: 2–3 drops orally given at birth or within the first 2 weeks of life

Polio 1: 2–3 drops orally given at 6 weeks

Polio 2: 2–3 drops orally given at 10 weeks

Polio 3: 2–3 drops orally given at 14 weeks

Booster doses may be given at 3 years of age

Contraindications

  • Immunocompromised patients and their close household contacts
  • Severe acute febrile illness

Side Effects

  • Mild stomach upset

Patient Instructions

  • Dispose of the child's faeces properly as the virus spreads through the oral-faecal route
  • Wash hands thoroughly after changing the baby's nappies

  • Not applicable

Storage

  • Store between 2–8°C
  • The vaccine loses its effects once the container has been opened; any vaccine remaining at the end of an immunisation schedule should be disposed

⚠️ Caution

  • Postpone vaccination in the event of severe acute febrile illness (minor infections are not contraindications)
  • Minimum interval between doses is 4 weeks
  • If child has diarrhoea or vomiting, give the vaccine and then repeat dose 4 weeks later
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions leaflet that accompanies the vaccine to be sure whether to administer 2 or 3 drops in the child’s mouth
