PHENYLEPHRINE EYE DROPS

Sympathomimetic mydriatic agent. Dilates pupils within 60‒90 minutes and effects last for 5‒7 hours

Uses

  • Dilate pupil for diagnosis or pre-operative preparation (mydriasis)

Dose and Duration

Mydriasis

Apply 1 drop to each eye. Repeat if necessary once only, at least 1 hour after the first dose

Contraindications

  • Children and elderly (Do not use 10% solution due to risk of systemic side effects)
  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Glaucoma

Side Effects

  • Pain and stinging in the eye, blurred vision, photophobia, raised intraocular pressure
  • Systemic effects: palpitations, arrhythmias, hypertension

Interactions

  • Antihypertensives (reversal of antihypertensive effect)
  • Amitriptyline (increased risk of side effects)
  • Halothane (increased risk of irregular heart beat)
  • Digoxin (increased risk of arrhythmias)

Patient Instructions

  • Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision becomes clear
