Tablet

250 mg

Uses

  • Rheumatic fever
  • Rheumatic heart disease
  • Bacterial tonsillitis
  • Bacterial sore throat
  • Acute kidney infection
  • Mouth and teeth infection

Dose and Duration

All uses

Adult: 500 mg

Child 6–12 years: 250 mg

Child 1–5 years: 125 mg

Child <1 year: 62.5 mg/kg

Duration according to use:

Use Duration
Rheumatic fever Every 6 hours for 7 days
Rheumatic heart disease Every 12 hours for up to 30 years of age
Bacterial tonsillitis, sore throat, acute kidney infection Every 6 hours for 10 days
Mouth and dental infections Every 6 hours for 5 days

Contraindications

  • Penicillin allergy
  • Cephalosporin allergy (possible cross-sensitivity )
  • Severe infections

Side Effects

  • Allergic reactions
  • Stomach upset

Interactions

  • Methotrexate (increased methotrexate toxicity)

Patient Instructions

  • Take at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after food
  • Stop taking the medicine and report to the health worker immediately in case any skin rash occurs
