Dose and Duration

Oral candidiasis

Adult and child >12 years: Chew 500,000 IU tablet every 6 hours for 10 days

Child 5–12 years: Chew 250,000 IU tablet every 6 hours for 10 days

Child <5 years: 100,000 IU oral suspension every 6 hours for 10 days

In immunosuppressed patients, give for 14–20 days

Vaginal candidiasis

Insert 1 pessary vaginally each night for 10 days

Apply cream to the area around the vagina

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset, oral irritation
  • Rash

Interactions

  • Clotrimazole pessaries (cancelled effect)

Patient Instructions

  • Take the tablets after food
  • Do not swallow the pessaries
  • Do not interrupt treatment during menstruation
  • For pessaries, lie on your back so as to insert pessary as high as possible into the vagina

Pregnancy

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • For vaginal candidiasis, preferably use clotrimazole pessaries
  • In immunocompromised (e.g. HIV/AIDS patients), nystatin is not highly effective for candidiasis; ketoconazole should be used if available
