Dosage Forms

Tablet

Uses

  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection
  • Treatment of severe, recurrent urinary tract infection
  • Prophylaxis of chronic urinary tract infection

Dose and Duration

Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Adult: 100 mg every 12 hours for 7 days

Child >3 months: 3 mg/kg/day every 6 hours for 7 days

Severe recurrent urinary tract infections

Adult: 100 mg every 6 hours for 7 days

If severe nausea occurs, reduce to 200 mg daily in divided doses

Prophylaxis of chronic urinary tract infections

Adult: 50–100 mg at night

Child >3 months: 1 mg/kg at night (with regular monitoring of lung and liver function)

Contraindications

  • Child less than 3 months
  • Kidney disease
  • Allergy to nitrofurantoin

Side Effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Allergic reactions
  • Discolouration of urine

Patient Instructions

  • Take with food
  • May colour urine yellow or darkish brown; do not worry

Pregnancy

  • Do not use in 3ʳᵈ trimester

Breast-feeding

  • Do not use
