Uses

  • Urinary tract infections

Dose and Duration

Urinary tract infections

Adult and child >12 years: 1 g every 6 hours for 7 days. In chronic infections, reduce dose to 500 mg every 6 hours

Child 3 months–12 years: 12.5 mg/kg every 6 hours for 7 days reduced to 7.5 mg/kg every 6 hours in prolonged therapy or 15 mg/kg twice daily for prophylaxis

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to quinolones

Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea
  • Headache, dizziness, vertigo, weakness
  • Rash, pruritus
  • Stevens- Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic psychosis

Interactions

  • Warfarin: (enhanced anticoagulant effect)
  • Artemether/ Lumefantrine: (increased risk of arrhythmias)
  • Ciclosporin: (increased risk of nephrotoxicity)
  • NSAIDs: (increased risk of convulsions)

Patient Instructions

  • Take your medication at least one hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Use with caution in liver and renal disease. Avoid if eGFR is less than 20 ml/minute/1.73 m²
