Alkylating agent anticancer. Also known as chlormethine or nitrogen mustard

Uses

  • Hodgkin’s disease
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Lung cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia

Dose and Duration

Consult product literature

Usually 0.4 mg/kg per day per cycle in as a single dose or in divided doses

Contraindications

  • Severe infections
  • Hypersensitivity to mustine

Side Effects

  • Myelosuppression (neutropenia, anaemia, leucopoenia thrombocytopenia)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tiredness, weakness, malaise
  • Loss of appetite; taste changes
  • Tinnitus
  • Hair loss
  • Loss of fertility, amenorrhoea (reversible)
  • Injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Skin rash
  • Numbness in fingers

Interactions

  • Live vaccines: (risk of developing disease)

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Discontinue breastfeeding

⚠️ Caution

  • Monitor full blood count before and during treatment
  • Anticancer medicines should only be handled by health workers trained and experienced in cytotoxic medicines
