⚠️ Caution

  • Mitomycin is irritant to tissues. Handle with caution
  • Discontinue treatment immediately if signs such as itching, rash, hot flush, sweating, dyspnoea and decreased blood pressure occur
  • Causes delayed bone marrow toxicity. Prolonged use may result in permanent bone-marrow damage, lung fibrosis and renal damage
  • Avoid simultaneous use of radiotherapy
  • For administration into specific tissues, mitomycin can be given by the intra-arterial route directly into the tumours
  • Because of cumulative myelosuppression, patients should be fully re-evaluated after each course and the dose reduced if the patient has experienced any toxic effects
  • If disease progression continues after two treatment courses, stop drug as chances of response are minimal
  • Anticancer medicines should only be handled by health workers trained and experienced in cytotoxic medicines
