Uses

  • Oral and intestinal candidiasis
  • Vaginal and vulval candidiasis
  • Mycotic infections of skin and nails

Dose and Duration

Oral candidiasis

Adult: 5–10 ml in the mouth after food 4 times daily, retained near oral lesions before swallowing

Child > 6 years: 5 ml 4 times daily

Child 2–6 years: 5 ml twice daily retained near lesions before swallowing

Child 4 months–2 years: 2.5 ml twice daily, smeared around the mouth

Continue treatment for 48 hours after lesions have healed

Vaginal and vulval candidiasis

Insert 1 pessary at night for 3 days

Mycotic infections of skin and nails

Apply to the lesions 2 times daily. Rub the cream into the skin until it has fully penetrated for 2–6 weeks.

Continue treatment for two weeks after disappearance of lesions

Contraindications

  • Impaired swallowing reflex in infants
  • First 6 months of pre-term infants
  • Allergy to miconazole or imidazole antifungals

Side Effects

  • Local irritation, itching in genitals, burning sensation
  • Allergic reaction
  • Rash
  • Stomach upset
  • Dysmenorrhoea

Interactions

  • Phenytoin: (increased concentration of phenytoin)
  • Warfarin: (enhanced anticoagulant effect)

Patient Instructions

  • Apply oral gel after meals
  • Do not swallow oral gel immediately. Keep in mouth as long as possible
  • Pessary best inserted when you are lying on your back

Pregnancy

  • Do not use oral gel

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

  • Can damage latex condoms and diaphragms
