Topical anti-infective with antibacterial and antifungal properties; effective in drying wet lesions of skin infections

Uses

  • Oral candidiasis
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Athletes foot (wet lesions )
  • Impetigo (wet lesions )

Dose and Duration

Oral candidiasis and mouth ulcers

Apply 0.5% directly to affected area every 12 hours for 5 days

Athletes foot and impetigo

Apply 1% directly to affected area every 12 hours until the lesion is dry

Preparation

  • If 0.5% gentian violet is needed but unavailable, dilute 1% with an equal amount of clean water to get 0.5%

Contraindications

  • Deep wounds

Side Effects

  • Skin irritation
  • Allergic reactions
  • Staining of the skin and clothing

Patient Instructions

  • Do not swallow the solution
  • Patient may apply cooking oil or vaseline on the skin around the lesion to minimise staining
  • Stop treatment if severe skin irritation or new ulcers develop
  • Do not use on face and deep wounds
  • If product accidentally enters the eyes, rinse with plenty of clean water
  • May cause permanent staining in clothes or fabric
  • Do not apply to breasts if breast-feeding

Storage

  • Do not keep diluted solution for more than one week
