Uses

  • Long-term (3 months) prevention of unwanted pregnancy

Dose and Duration

Prevention of unwanted pregnancy

1 injection every 12 weeks (3 months) during the first 5 days of a normal menstrual cycle or 5 days post-partum if the mother is not breast-feeding

Initiation as for etonogestrel implant

Use for as long as contraception is desired

Contraindications

  • Breast cancer
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Recent stroke
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Severe or recent liver disease
  • Unexplained abnormal vaginal bleeding

Side Effects

  • Menstrual disturbances
  • Delayed return to fertility after stopping the injection
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Allergic reactions
  • Weight gain
  • Osteoporosis

Patient Instructions

  • Return of fertility can be delayed after stopping use

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Shake vial before use to mix the suspension well
  • Medroxyprogesterone is a good alternative to oral contraceptives in patients on rifampicin, carbamazepine, isoniazid, and phenobarbital as these medicines do not affect the contraceptive effectiveness
