Uses

  • Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea
  • Symptomatic treatment of chronic diarrhoea

Dose and Duration

Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea

Adult and child over 12 years: initially 4 mg, followed by 2 mg after each further loose stool (max 12 mg in 24 hours)

Child 8–12 years: 2 mg every 6 hours for up to 5 days

Child 4–8 years: 1 mg 3–4 times daily for up to 3 days only

Symptomatic treatment of chronic diarrhoea

Adult: 4–8 mg daily in divided doses adjusted according to response and given in 2 divided doses for maintenance

Child 12–18 years: 2–4 mg 2 to 4 times daily

Child 1 month–12 years: not recommended

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Constipation
  • Diverticular disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

Side Effects

  • Constipation, flatulence, nausea, headache

Patient Instructions

  • Take the capsules with a liquid
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose
  • In case there is no improvement after 48 hours, stop medication and see your doctor

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Do not use

⚠️ Caution

  • Discontinue if constipation, abdominal distension or ileus develop
  • Patients with AIDS treated with loperamide for diarrhoea should stop therapy at the earliest signs of abdominal distension due to increased risk of toxic megacolon
  • Discontinue if there is no improvement after 48 hours
