Uses

  • Prevent pain before surgical procedure
  • Mouth ulcers

Dose and Duration

Prevent pain before surgical procedure

3 mg/kg (max 200 mg). Usually single dose is given; may be repeated if necessary. Anaesthesia is produced within 2–5 minutes and lasts 1–1.5 hours

Prevent pain before suturing wound

Use lignocaine 2%

Mouth ulcers

Apply gel inside the mouth surface when necessary.

Adult: 2–3 ml

Child: 1–2 ml

Sore throat, mouth ulcers

Apply spray or suck lozenge as needed

Severe pain after insect bite

Infiltrate 2mL of 2% solution around the area of the bite

Contraindications

  • Allergy to lignocaine
  • Skin infection
  • Patients on warfarin or aspirin
  • Severe anaemia
  • Severe heart disease

Side Effects

  • Dizziness, restlessness
  • Blurred vision
  • Tremors
  • Allergic reactions

Interactions

  • Atenolol (increased effect of atenolol)
  • Propranolol (increased effect of propranolol)

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Use lower doses in elderly, epileptic patients, and in acute illness
  • Epidural injection should only be given by specialists
