3.1–3.7 g/5 ml

Uses

  • Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Constipation

Dose and Duration

Hepatic encephalopathy

Adult and child above 12 years: 30–50 ml every 8 hours.

Adjust dose to produce 2–3 soft stools per day

Constipation

Adult: 15 ml every 12 hours

Child 5–18 years: 5–20 ml every 12 hours

Child 1–5 years: 2.5–10 ml every 12 hours

Child 1 month–1 year: 2.5 ml every 12 hours

Adjust dose according to response

Contraindications

  • Galactosaemia
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Digestive tract perforation or risk of perforation
  • Hypersensitivity

Side Effects

  • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, cramps, abdominal discomfort

Patient Instructions

  • Take with water, fruit juice or meals to reduce nausea
  • Lactulose solution may be taken diluted or undiluted
  • Swallow each dose of lactulose at once and should not be kept in the mouth for an extended period of time
  • Consult your doctor if constipation persists after 3 days

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Chronic use of unadjusted doses and misuse can result into diarrhoea and disturbances in electrolyte balance
  • The doses used in hepatic encephalopathy should be taken into consideration in diabetics. Doses used in constipation do not pose a problem to the diabetics
  • Defecation reflex may be disturbed during treatment in children
