KETOCONAZOLE

Antifungal medicine; should only be used in immunesuppressed patients who have failed to respond to other antifungals, such as clotrimazole, nystatin, and fluconazole

Tablet

200 mg

Uses

  • Chronic oral and oesophageal candidiasis
  • Chronic resistant vaginal candidiasis

Dose and Duration

Adult and child >30kg: 200 mg once daily until symptoms have cleared
Child 15-30kg: 100 mg once daily until symptoms clear

Contraindications

  • Liver disease

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Liver damage
  • Rash, itching

Interactions

  • Nevirapine (reduced effect of ketoconazole)
  • Aminophylline (increased effect of aminophylline)

Patient Instructions

  • Take with food
  • Stop the medicine and report to health worker immediately if signs of extreme weight loss, nausea, vomiting, feeling of tiredness, abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of skin or eyes occur

  • Do not use

Breastfeeding

  • Do not use

⚠️ Caution

  • Avoid using for longer than 10 days
  • Stop medicine immediately if signs of liver damage occur
