HYALURONIDASE

An enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid. Used in soft tissue disorders where there is need for resorption of excess fluids or medicine

Uses

  • Enhance tissue permeation of fluids injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly
  • Promote resorption of excess fluids and blood

Dose and Duration

With IM or SC injection
Adult: 1500 IU dissolved directly in solution to be injected
With local anaesthetics
Adult and child: 1500 IU mixed with local anaesthetic solution (15 IU/ml in ophthalmology). Hyaluronidase can be injected into tubing of the infusion set about 2 cm back from the needle at the start of the infusion
Hypodermoclysis
Adult and child: 1500 IU dissolved in 1 ml water for injections or sodium chloride 0.9% injection, administered before starting 500–1000 ml infusion
Extravasation or haematoma
Adult and child: 1500 IU dissolved in 1 ml of water or sodium chloride 0.9% injection, infiltrated into affected area as soon as possible

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to hyaluronidase
  • Use as intravenous injection
  • Reduction of swelling of bites, stings, infection or malignancy
  • Anaesthesia in unexplained premature labour
  • Direct application to the cornea

  • Oedema
  • Anaphylaxis

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Do not use to enhance the absorption and dispersion of dopamine and/or alpha agonist medicines
  • Solutions for subcutaneous administration should be isotonic with extracellular fluid
