Uses

Dose and Duration

High level disinfection of medical equipment
Completely immerse the instrument in an activated 2% solution of glutaraldehyde for 30 minutes. Then thoroughly rinse with sterile water

Preparation

  • Activate using powder or liquid supplied by the manufacturer

Side Effects

  • Skin irritation, dermatitis, skin sensitisation
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Eye irritation
  • Respiratory tract irritation, breathlessness
  • Rhinitis, occupational asthma

Storage

  • Keep activated solution at 15–40°C and for NOT more than 2 weeks

⚠️ Caution

  • Glutaraldehyde should not be inhaled, ingested or used on skin, eyes or other mucous membranes
  • Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye protection when using glutaraldehyde
  • Use only in well ventilated areas
  • In case of contact with eyes, immediately flush the eyes with water and continue washing for at least 15 minutes and then seek medical attention without delay. Do not remove contact lenses during washing
  • In case of contact with skin, immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention
  • In case of inhalation, move the patient to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if it is required
  • In case of ingestion, wash out mouth thoroughly with water and drink large quantities of demulcents such as milk. DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention
  • All equipment should first be carefully cleaned to remove dirt and organic matter before soaking in glutaraldehyde
  • Discard solution if it becomes cloudy
