GLIBENCLAMIDE
Sulphonylurea. Oral antidiabetic (hypoglycaemic) medicine for non-insulin dependent diabetes

Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Dose and Duration

Diabetes mellitus
Adult:
Initially 5 mg orally once daily; increased according to response to a maximum of 15 mg.
Doses > 10 mg should be taken in 2 divided doses
Elderly:
2.5 mg orally once daily
Contraindications

Type 1 (insulin-dependent diabetes)
Ketoacidosis
Porphyria
Severe renal disease
Severe liver disease
Allergy to sulphonylureas or sulphonamides
Children
Overweight patients

Interactions

Chloramphenicol (increased effect of glibenclamide)
Fluconazole (increased concentration of glibenclamide)
Rifampicin (Reduced effect of glibenclamide)
Warfarin (increased hypoglycaemic effect)
Patient Instructions

Take with or immediately after breakfast
Do not take the medicine when you have skipped a meal or on an empty stomach to avoid risk of low blood sugar

Use lower doses in elderly and in patients with liver or kidney insufficiency because of the risk of hypoglycaemia
During pregnancy, severe illness, trauma, surgery, use insulin instead
Counsel patient to continue with exercise and dietary measures of controlling blood glucose
