Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Dose and Duration

Diabetes mellitus
Adult: Initially 5 mg orally once daily; increased according to response to a maximum of 15 mg.
Doses > 10 mg should be taken in 2 divided doses
Elderly: 2.5 mg orally once daily

Contraindications

  • Type 1 (insulin-dependent diabetes)
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Porphyria
  • Severe renal disease
  • Severe liver disease
  • Allergy to sulphonylureas or sulphonamides
  • Children
  • Overweight patients

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Weight gain
  • Allergic reaction

Interactions

  • Chloramphenicol (increased effect of glibenclamide)
  • Fluconazole (increased concentration of glibenclamide)
  • Rifampicin (Reduced effect of glibenclamide)
  • Warfarin (increased hypoglycaemic effect)

Patient Instructions

  • Take with or immediately after breakfast
  • Do not take the medicine when you have skipped a meal or on an empty stomach to avoid risk of low blood sugar

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Use lower doses in elderly and in patients with liver or kidney insufficiency because of the risk of hypoglycaemia
  • During pregnancy, severe illness, trauma, surgery, use insulin instead
  • Counsel patient to continue with exercise and dietary measures of controlling blood glucose
