Uses

  • Treatment of local herpes simplex infections

Dose and Duration

Local herpes simplex infections
Adult: instil 1 drop in the eyes 5 times a day until complete healing, then instil 1 drop 3 times a day for another 7 days

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to ganciclovir or acyclovir

Side Effects

  • Systemic effects unlikely after ocular instillation
  • Burning sensation, brief tingling sensations
  • Superficial punctuate keratitis
  • Visual disturbance

Interactions

  • Imipenem with cilastatin (increased risk of convulsions)
  • Zidovudine (profound myelosuppression)

Patient Instructions

  • Discard 4 weeks since first opening
  • Do not drive or operate machines if visual disturbance occurs
