FLUCLOXACILLIN + AMOXICILLIN

A combination of narrow spectrum beta-lactamase stable penicillin (flucloxacillin) and broad-spectrum penicillin (amoxicillin). Flucloxacillin has activity against beta-lactamase producing Gram-positive bacteria but not against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

flucloxacillin 500 mg + amoxicillin 500 mg

Uses

  • Mixed infections involving beta-lactamase producing Staphylococci

Dose and Duration

Mixed infections involving beta-lactamase producing Staphylococci
Adult: by slow IV injection over 3–4 minutes or by IM injection, 500–1000 mg every 6–8 hours according to severity of infection
Child 2–12 years: ½ adult dose
Child 1 month–2 years: ¼ adult dose

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins
  • History of flucloxacillin-associated jaundice or hepatic dysfunction

Side Effects

  • Skin rash, urticaria, fever, pruritus, joint pain
  • Angioedema, anaphylaxis
  • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breast-feeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Use with caution in patients with porphyria and in newborns
  • Avoid contact with skin due to risk of skin sensitisation
