  • Urethral discharge syndrome

Dose and Duration

Moderate pneumonia, gum infection; post-partum haemorrhage
Adult: 500 mg every 6 hours for 5 days
Child: 10–15 mg/kg every 6 hours for 5 days
Bacterial sore throat (alternative to benzathine penicillin or phenoxymethylpenicillin); breast infection
Adult: 500 mg every 6 hours for 10 days
Child: 12.5 mg/kg every 6 hours for 10 days
Cholera (second line treatment)
Adult and child >12 years: 500 mg every 6 hours for 3 days
Child 6–12 years: 25–50 mg/kg every 6 hours for 3 days
Child 1–5 years: 250 mg every 6 hours for 3 days
Child 4–12 months: 125 mg every 6 hours for 3 days
Child 2–4 months: 62.5 mg every 6 hours for 3 days
Ophthalmia of the new born
Neonate: 10 mg/kg every 6 hours for 14–21 days
Trachoma, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), inguinal swelling, genital ulcer
Adult: 500 mg every 6 hours for 14 days
Child: 10–15 mg/kg every 6 hours for 14 days
Urethral discharge syndrome; abnormal vaginal discharge syndrome (alternative to doxycycline)
Adult: 500 mg every 6 hours for 7 days
Treat partner

Contraindications

  • Allergy to erythromycin and other macrolides (e.g. azithromycin)

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Hearing damage
  • Allergic reaction (rash)

Interactions

  • Artemether + lumefantrine (increased risk of irregular heartbeat )
  • Carbamazepine (increased plasma concentration levels)
  • Aminophylline (plasma concentration of aminophylline increased)
  • Warfarin (increased anticoagulant effect of warfarin)

Patient Instructions

  • Tablets should be swallowed whole; do not crush tablets

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Reduce dose in severe liver disease (max 1.5 mg daily)
