Dose and Duration

Brucellosis (in combination with gentamicin)
Adult:100 mg every 12 hours for 6 weeks
Child > 8 years: 2 mg/kg every 12 hours for 6 weeks
Plague
Adult:100 mg every 12 hours for 7 days
Child > 8 years: 2 mg/kg every 12 hours for 7days
Chlamydial vaginal and urethral discharge syndrome
Adult:100 mg every 12 hours for 14 days

Treat partner as well

Typhus fever, moderate pneumonia
Adult:100 mg every 12 hours for 7-10 days
Child > 8 years:2 mg/kg every 12 hours for 7–10 days
Acute bacterial throat infections, infected bite wound, tropical ulcer
Adult:100 mg every 12 hours for 5 days
Child > 8 years:2 mg/kg every 12 hours for 5 days
Cholera
Adult:300 mg single dose
Child > 8 years:2 mg/kg single dose
Inguinal swelling (bubo)
Adult:100 mg every 12 hours for 10 days

Contraindications

  • Children aged below 8 years
  • Allergy to tetracycline
  • Severe liver disease

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Allergic reactions (rash)
  • Mouth and throat ulcers

Interactions

  • Zinc (reduced absorption)
  • Ferrous salts, milk (reduced absorption)
  • Magnesium trisilicate compound (reduced absorption)

Patient Instructions

  • Take with meals and a full glass of water
  • Take 2 hours apart from milk, iron salts, and magnesium trisilicate compound

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breastfeeding

  • Do not use
