Uses

  • Moderate to severe pain of inflammation in rheumatic disease and other musculoskeletal disorders
  • Acute gout
  • Post-operative pain
  • Post-operative pain
  • Local symptomatic relief of pain

Dose and Duration

Pain and inflammation
Adult:75‒100 mg daily in 2‒3 divided doses (max 150 mg daily)
Child:0.3‒2 mg/kg rectally every 6‒8 hours (max. 150 mg daily)

Continue for as long as pain is there but avoid using for long periods

Local symptomatic relief of pain
Adult and child: apply a thin layer of gel 3–4 times daily for 14 days (28 days in osteoarthritis)

Contraindications

  • Previous or current peptic ulcer disease
  • Previous or active gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Asthma
  • Previous or current cerebrovascular bleeding
  • Operations with high risk of haemorrhage
  • Kidney disease
  • Hypovolemia and dehydration
  • Severe liver disease

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset, dyspepsia
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, rash)
  • Suppositories may cause rectal irritation

Interactions

  • Other NSAIDS (increased risk of side effects)
  • Anticoagulants e.g. warfarin, heparins (increased risk of haemorrhage)
  • Quinolones e.g. ciprofloxacin (possible increased risk of convulsions)

Patient Instructions

  • Take with or after food to reduce stomach irritation

Pregnancy

  • Do not use

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Avoid using for extended periods to prevent risk of developing gastrointestinal disease
  • Use lowest effective dose in elderly as they are at more risk for side effects
