Uses

  • Paucibacillary (PB) leprosy
  • Multibacillary (MB) leprosy
  • Primary prophylaxis of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (alternative to cotrimoxazole in hypersensitivity in HIV patients)

Dose and Duration

Paucibacillary leprosy (in combination with rifampicin)
Adult and child >15 years: 100 mg once daily for 6 months
Child 10-14 years: 50 mg once daily for 6 months
Child under 10 years: 2 mg/kg once daily for 6 months
Multibacillary leprosy (in combination with rifampicin and clofazimine)
Adult and child >15 years: 100 mg once daily for 12 months
Child 10-14 years: 50 mg once daily for 12 months
Child under 10 years: 2 mg/kg once daily for 12 months
Primary prophylaxis of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (alternative in cotrimoxazole hypersensitivity)
Adult and child over 12 years: 100 mg by mouth once daily

Contraindications

  • Allergy to dapsone
  • Severe anaemia

Side Effects

  • Blood disorders
  • Haemolysis
  • Allergic skin rash
  • Stomach upset
  • Palpitations
  • Headache
  • Nervousness

Patient Instructions

  • Treatment lasts for 6 months. It is important to complete the schedule to ensure complete healing
  • Stop the medicine and report to health worker immediately if any severe skin rash, bruising, yellowing of eyes, or fever occur

⚠️ Caution

  • If the diagnosis is not clear between PB leprosy and MB leprosy, then the regimen for MB leprosy should be used
  • Stop the medicine in case of severe allergic reaction
