Sedating antihistamine that relieves itching caused by several conditions

Dosage Forms

Uses

  • Chicken pox
  • Herpes zoster
  • Snake bite
  • Severe local reaction after insect bites and stings
  • Eczema
  • Skin allergy
  • Glue ear (otitis media with effusion )
  • Nasal allergy

Dose and Duration

Chicken pox and herpes zoster
Adult:4 mg every 12 hours for 3 days
Child < 5 years:4 1 mg every 12 hours for 3 days
Snake bite
4 mg every 6–8 hours for 3 days
Insect bites and stings

Give until swelling subsides

Adults: 4 mg every 6 hours; max 24 mg daily
Child 6–12 years:2 mg every 6 hours; max 12 mg daily
Child 2–5 years:1 mg every 6 hours; max 6 mg daily
Child 1–2 years: 1 mg every 12 hours
Glue ear (otitis media with effusion )
Same as for insect bites for 10 days
Nasal allergy
Same as for insect bites for 21 days

Contraindications

  • Urinary and prostate disorders
  • Glaucoma
  • Children <1 year old

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness, sedation, headache, dizziness
  • Dry mouth, constipation
  • Urinary retention
  • Tinnitus
  • Blurred vision

Interactions

  • Alcohol (increased sedation)
  • Morphine (increased sedation)
  • Chlorpromazine (increased sedation)
  • Promethazine (increased sedation)
  • Phenobarbital (increased sedation)
  • Amitriptyline (increased sedation)
  • Diazepam (increased sedation)

Patient Instructions

  • Do not drive or operate machinery
  • Do not drink alcohol

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used

Storage

  • Use diluted solution within 1 week

⚠️ Caution

  • Chlorpheniramine has no anti-emetic effect
  • Less sedating than promethazine
