Uses

  • Urethral discharge syndrome (male)
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge syndrome
  • Lower abdominal pain syndrome (female)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections

Dose and Duration

Urethral discharge syndrome, abnormal vaginal discharge syndrome
Adult:400 mg as a single dose
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
Adult and child over 10 years: 200–400 mg daily in 1–2 divided doses for 7 days
Child 5–10 years: 200 mg once daily for 5−7 days
Child 1-4 years: 100 mg once daily for 5−7 days
Child 6 months-1 years: 75 mg once daily for 5−7 days
Lower abdominal pain syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Adult: 400 mg daily in 1–2 divided doses for 5–10 days
Note: In renal failure with creatinine clearance ˂20 ml/min, do not exceed 200 mg daily

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort
  • Headache
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome, allergic reaction, anaphylaxis

Interactions

  • Warfarin (possibly enhanced anticoagulant effect)

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Give with caution in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity due to likelihood of cross-sensitivity.
  • In patients with history of cephalosporin induced haemolytic anaemia, avoid re-administration
  • Discontinue cefixime in case acute renal failure or tubulointerstitial nephritis occurs
  • Reduce dose in moderate to severe renal impairment
