Uses

  • Management of hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis)

Dose and Duration

Management of hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis)
Adult: 20–60 mg daily in 2–3 divided doses until patient becomes euthyroid. Then reduce dose gradually to a maintenance dose of 5–15 mg once daily for 6–18 months
Or Blocking-replacement regimen: : maintain dose at 20 60 mg daily after patient is euthyroid and add L-thyroxine to the regimen. Therapy is given for 12–18 months
Child 12-18 years: 30 mg daily in single or divided doses until euthyroid then gradually reduce the dose to a maintenance dose of 9–18 mg daily in single or divided doses for 12–24 months
Neonate and child up to 12 years: 0.75 mg/kg daily in single or divided doses until euthyroid (max 1 mg/kg daily in neonate and 30 mg daily in child). Then gradually re duce the dose to a maintenance dose of 0.225–0.45 mg/kg daily in single or divided doses for 12–24 months

Contraindications

  • Severe blood disorders
  • Severe hepatic disorders

Side Effects

  • Bone marrow depression including neutropoenia, eosinophilia, leucopoenia and agranulocytosis
  • Insulin autoimmune syndrome (with pronounced decline in blood glucose level)
  • Nausea, abdominal discomfort, taste disturbance
  • Headache, malaise
  • Fever
  • Rash, pruritus
  • Joint pain

Patient Instructions

  • If symptoms and signs such as sore throat, mouth ulcers, bruising, fever, malaise or non-specific illness develop, stop the medication and consult your doctor immediately

Pregnancy

  • Do not use in 1st trimester

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Use with caution in mild to moderate hepatic impairment
  • Use the lowest dose that can control the hyperthyroid state in pregnancy and breast feeding
