Polypeptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces capreolus which is active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Uses

  • Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB)
  • Tuberculosis (second-line)

Dose and Duration

Tuberculosis (second-line; in combination with other medicines)
Adult: 1 g daily (max 20 mg/kg/day) by deep IM injection only for 2–4 months followed by 1 g IM 2–3 times a week
Renal impairment: Reduce dose

Preparation

  • Dissolve in 2 ml of 0.5% sodium chloride IV infusion or water for injections. Allow 2–3 minutes for complete dissolution

  • Hypersensitivity

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions e.g. urticaria, rashes
  • Leukocytosis or leucopoenia

  • Store below 250C

⚠️ Caution

  • Use with caution in auditory and hepatic impairment
  • Monitor renal, hepatic, auditory, vestibular function and electrolytes
  • Reduce dose in renal impairment
  • Only use in pregnancy if benefit outweighs risk
