Uses

  • Prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency
  • Muscle cramps associated with pregnancy

Dose and Duration

Calcium deficiency
Give 300–600 mg every 8–12 hours before meals
Muscle cramps associated with pregnancy
Give 600 mg every 8 hours for 5 days

Contraindications

  • Conditions with too much calcium in urine or blood

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset, dry mouth
  • Increased thirst, increased urination
  • Allergic reaction
  • Irregular heartbeat

Interactions

  • Iron salts (reduced absorption)
  • Ciprofloxacin (reduced absorption)
  • Furosemide (risk of kidney stones and high calcium blood levels)
  • Zinc sulphate (reduced absorption)

Patient instructions

  • Do not take at the same time with ciprofloxacin, zinc, or iron salts; take at least two hours apart
