Antidote for magnesium sulphate toxicity

Dosage Forms

Injection

1 g (100 mg/ml; 10% solution) in 10 ml ampoule

Uses

  • Magnesium sulphate overdose
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Hypocalcemia

Dose and Duration

Magnesium sulphate overdose
1–2 g by slow IV injection (over 5 minutes) Repeat as necessary until respiratory rate increases (above 16 breaths per minute)

Contraindications

  • Severe kidney disease
  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Severe hypercalciuria

Side Effects

  • Tingling sensations, feeling hot and sweaty, dizziness
  • Injection site reactions (pain, abscess, death of tissue)

Pregnancy

  • Can be used

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Patient should lie down before the injection and remain lying for 30–60 minutes after
  • Do not give injection too fast or for prolonged periods
  • Do not use if a precipitate is present in the ampoule
  • Do not administer by IM or SC route
