CALCIUM GLUCONATE
Antidote for magnesium sulphate toxicity

Injection
1 g (100 mg/ml; 10% solution) in 10 ml ampoule
Uses

Magnesium sulphate overdose
Hyperkalemia
Hypocalcemia
Dose and Duration
▼
Magnesium sulphate overdose
1–2 g by slow IV injection (over 5 minutes) Repeat as necessary until respiratory rate increases (above 16 breaths per minute)
Contraindications

Severe kidney disease
Hypercalcaemia
Severe hypercalciuria
Side Effects
▼
Tingling sensations, feeling hot and sweaty, dizziness
Injection site reactions (pain,
abscess
, death of tissue)
Pregnancy

⚠️ Caution
▼
Patient should lie down before the injection and remain lying for 30–60 minutes after
Do not give injection too fast or for prolonged periods
Do not use if a precipitate is present in the ampoule
Do not administer by IM or SC route
