Benzoic acid 6% + salicylic acid 3% ointment

Uses

  • Benzoic acid 6% + salicylic acid 3% ointment

Dose and Duration

Ringworm on skin and scalp
2 applications per day for 4–6 weeks depending on clinical response

Contraindications

  • Wet lesions
  • Open wounds
  • Broken skin

Side Effects

  • Skin irritation

Patient instructions

  • Wash hands before and after use
  • Apply a thin layer to affected area and rub in gently
  • Continue applying to the area for 14 days after lesions have resolved
  • May cause skin irritation and inflammation; usually mild, so continue treatment
  • In case of contact with eyes or mucous membranes, flush with plenty of clean water
  • Do not apply to breasts if breastfeeding

⚠️ Caution

  • In case of secondary bacterial infection, start appropriate local disinfectant or systemic antibiotic before applying Whitfield's ointment
  • Use in combination with griseofulvin in the event of severe infection
