Tablet

Uses

  • Mild hypertension (stage 1)
  • Moderate to severe hypertension (as part of combination therapy)

Dose and Duration

Adult: 2.5–5 mg each morning

Contraindications

  • Low plasma sodium and potassium
  • High plasma calcium levels
  • Gout
  • Diabetes
  • Severe liver disease
  • Severe kidney disease

Side Effects

  • Mild stomach upset
  • Dehydration, dry mouth, thirst
  • Weakness, drowsiness, headache
  • Muscle pains or cramps
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness when standing up quickly
  • Electrolyte imbalance, raised blood glucose levels
  • Gout

Interactions

  • Calcium salts (increased risk of high calcium blood levels)

Patient instructions

  • Increases urination so take medicine in the morning to avoid interfering with sleep
  • If patient feels dizzy while on medicine, they should lie down immediately, then report to health worker
  • Avoid standing up suddenly to avoid dizziness
  • Eat a lot of fresh fruits (bananas, mangoes, oranges)
