B-blocker with antihypertensive and antidysrhythmic activity.

Moderate to severe hypertension(Stage 2)

Moderate to severe hypertension(Stage 2)
Adult:
25–100 mg daily
Contraindications
▼
Coronary artery vasospasm (Prinzmetal’s angina)
Hypotension
Marked bradycardia
Sick sinus syndrome
Cardiogenic shock
Metabolic acidosis
Second and third degree atrioventricular block
Severe peripheral arterial disease
Uncontrolled heart failure
Severe asthma and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Untreated pheochromocytoma

Gastrointestinal disturbances, constipation
Bradycardia, cold extremities
Fatigue, sweating
Bronchospasm
Interactions
▼
Alpha blockers (enhanced hypotensive effect)
Amiodarone (AV block and myocardial depression)
Epinephrine (severe hypertension)
Lidocaine (increased myocardial depression)
Nifedipine (enhanced hypotensive effect)
Procainamide (increased myocardial depression)
Verapamil (asystole, severe hypotension, heart failure)

Do not use in 1st and 2nd trimesters

Atenolol should not be withdrawn abruptly
Reduce dose in renal failure
May mask the signs of hypoglycaemia and thyrotoxicosis
