Uses

  • Severe P. falciparum malaria
  • Initial treatment of uncomplicated malaria when persistent vomiting prevents use of the oral route

Dose and Duration

Severe P. falciparum malaria and initial treatment of uncomplicated malaria
Adult and child >6 months: Loading dose of 3.2 mg/kg by IM injection on first day followed by 1.6 mg/kg once daily for 3 days

As soon as patient can take orally, change to oral route and give a 3-day course of first line ACT

Contraindications

  • Children <4 months of age or <5 kg body weight
  • Severe liver disease
  • Severe kidney disease

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Irregular heartbeat

Interactions

  • Azithromycin and erythromycin (increased risk of Irregular heartbeat)
  • Ciprofloxacin (increased risk of Irregular heartbeat)

Pregnancy

  • Do not use in 1st trimester

Breastfeeding

  • Can be used
