Uses

  • Post-operative wounds and skin infections
  • Pulmonary infections
  • Bronchopneumonia
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Puerperal fever
  • Bacteraemia associated with or suspected to be associated with any of the infections above

Dose and Duration

All uses
Give slow IV over 3–4 minutes for 5–14 days Adult and child over 10 years: 500–1000 mg every 6 hours by mouth OR 500–1000 mg every 4–6 hours by IV or IM injection
Child 2-10 years:250–500 mg every 6 hours OR 250-500 mg every 4–6 hours by IM or IV injection
Child < 2 years:250 mg every 6 hours by mouth OR 250 mg every 4–6 hours by IV/IM injection
Neonate:90 mg every 4 hours

Preparation

  • For IM, dissolve 500 mg of powder in 1.5 ml of water for injection
  • For IV injection, dissolve 500 mg in 10 ml of water
