  • Helicobacter pylori
  • Infective endocarditis (prophylaxis)
  • Mouth infection
  • Laryngitis
  • Low to moderate severity pneumonia
  • Meningitis
  • Otitis media
  • Peritonsillar abscess Pneumonia
  • Sinus infection
  • Skin infection
  • Typhoid fever
  • Initial pre-referral dose for severe bacterial infection in case injectable medicines unavailable

Dose and Duration

Pneumonia in children
Child 1–5 years: 500 mg twice a day for 5 days
All other bacterial infections
Adult: 500 mg every 8 hours
Child 5–18 years: 250 mg every 8 hours
Child 1–5 years (10–19kg): 250 mg every 8 hours
Child 2–12 months (4–10kg): 125 mg every 8 hours
Child 1–<2 months (3–<4kg): 62.5 mg every 8 hours
Child <1 months (<3kg): 31.25 mg every 8 hours
In severe infections, double the dose
Use Duration
Otitis media, bladder infection, acute bronchitis, laryngitis, dental abscess 5 days
Bacterial tonsillitis, mouth infection 6 days
Pneumonia, sinus and skin infection 7–10 days
Helicobacter pylori (as part of triple therapy for peptic ulcers) 10–14 days
Typhoid fever, upper urinary tract infection 14 days
Chronic typhoid fever 4–6 weeks
Acute kidney infection 10 days

Contraindications

  • Penicillin allergy
  • Cephalosporin allergy (possible cross-sensitivity )

  • Stomach upset
  • Allergic reactions

Interactions

  • Methotrexate (increased methotrexate toxicity)

Patient Instructions

  • Take with food and plenty of water to reduce stomach upset
  • Use oral suspension within 1 week
  • If severe skin rash occurs, stop treatment immediately

  • Can be used

⚠️ Caution

  • Amoxicillin is absorbed better than ampicillin from gut
  • Reduce dose in patients with severe kidney disease
