Dosage Forms

Solution

70% ethanol

Uses

  • Disinfection of skin before injections, putting an IV cannula, getting a blood sample, and surgical procedures
  • Disinfection of rubber covers of infusion bottles and medicine vials (except those of vaccines)
  • Disinfection of hands

Dose and Duration

Apply undiluted solution directly to the skin area

Contraindications

  • Do not use on mucous membranes, wounds or burns as it is painful, irritating, and slows the healing process
  • Do not use on children <1 month old

  • Dry and irritated skin

  • Other disinfectants (increased risk of side effects)

Storage

  • Close bottles tightly to avoid evaporation of contents

  • Do not use on dirty or soiled skin (with blood, body fluids); wash skin first
  • Alcohol is flammable
